You learn to speak by speaking
A course gives you grammar and words. You often speak for only a few minutes a week. If you do not talk afterwards, you stay stuck at understanding.
In Bern you hear two kinds of German: Standard German in class, at school and in books, and Bernese German on the street and at the table. They are related but not the same. Almost everyone understands Standard German, so it is a good start. You pick up Bernese fastest by listening.
What helps most is talking regularly with the same people. After a few meetups you know their words and they know your mistakes, and it gets relaxed.
