SBB app basics

Buy tickets in the SBB Mobile app or at sbb.ch. It also sells Libero tickets for Bern. If you have a Halbtax, make sure it is linked to your SwissPass login so you get the half price. Compare the price in the app with the ticket machine before you pay.

Libero zones and Bernmobil

In and around Bern, all trains, trams and buses share the Libero fare system: you buy tickets or passes for the zones you travel through, one ticket for city and countryside. Tickets are sold in the SBB app, at machines and at staffed counters. Check libero.ch for zones and subscription prices.

Flixbus hack

Traveling via Flixbus is also possible inside of Switzerland. Flixbus is apparently not allowed yet to offer rides inside of Switzerland (Kabotageverbot) so they don't do it, but if you buy a ticket to Freiburg in Germany when you're going from Bern to Basel you can just get off in Basel, and it's still much cheaper in some cases than paying for the train. The same goes for Zürich if you travel from Bern to Lindau in Germany or Bregenz in Austria, or to Bern for as little as CHF 13.50: you can just get off at Zürich. No guarantee, but it seems that when you look for these rides from Bern and then from Basel/Zürich it shows the same arrival time, which is a pretty strong indicator. Check the trip tab, it shows all the stops.
